New Vehicle Protection Package
Many people who purchase a new vehicle may not understand that even though it is new, your vehicle still needs paint protection. All vehicles, even newly purchased ones, need supplemental paint protection in the form of a paint sealant, or at the very least a high quality wax.
Brand new vehicles with clear-coated paint, still need paint protection in order to resist the inevitable paint system failure.
Paint Sealant Is The Best Protection For Your Vehicle
The paint sealant actually bonds to your paint, whereas a wax sits on top of your paint. A Paint Sealant is a polymer based coating which creates an extremely durable barrier to guard your automobiles paint from the environment and prevents fading, loss of shine and oxidation.
A Paint Sealant protects your vehicle’s finish from acid rain, tree sap, bird droppings, weather induced fading, hard water etching, and industrial fallout.
Whereas a wax wears off and is washed away within 3-4 months. A paint sealant will generally last about 1 year. Depending on how you maintain your vehicle, it can last more or less. But 1 year is about average for a car that is washed and garaged regularly.
The Factory Clear-Coat Does Not Protect Your Paint
The ‘clear coat’ is simply part of the paint system used on most cars and trucks manufactured since the early 1990′s. This paint process consists of first painting the color (pigmented paint) that goes on flat without any shine, protection or durability. After the color has been added, clear urethane paint is added to make the finish hard and glossy.
Older (pre 1990′s and some newer) paints consist of a single stage paint, where the gloss and hardness is mixed with the color (pigment). Today’s clear coats simply make the paint look much more translucent with a deeper shine.
The fact is, both paint systems MUST be either waxed or sealed to protect them from the sun, pollution, bug spatter, bird droppings, and other harmful elements.
It is usually assumed that a new car is in perfect condition. Although it should be, this is most likely not the case. Just because your vehicle is new doesn’t necessarily mean the paint finish is flawless. Oftentimes, when a vehicle leaves the factory there are many paint imperfections that are missed or overlooked by the quality control personnel.
New cars being transported by train and truck, without any protection, are subjected to many contaminants along the way. Then after the vehicle arrives at the new car dealership, it may sit outside on a car lot for months before being sold. This gives plenty of time for a vehicle to attract all sorts of environmental contaminants to the paintwork.
Since most vehicles spend time at a car dealership, before being purchased, they are likely to be washed improperly several times by inexperienced lot attendants, causing scratches and bad swirl marks in the paint.
New car dealerships rarely carry out full details on new vehicles, so there’s likely to be a number of contaminants in your car’s paint. Having your new car properly detailed will start you off on the right foot, and ensure there is a layer of wax or sealant on the paint.
Today’s two stage paint can last the lifetime of the vehicle, but in order to keep it looking like new it must be polished and protected by applying a wax or paint sealant periodically.
If not maintained properly the clear coat will deteriorate and start to peel off and then your vehicle will require a new paint job, which can be very expensive to have done.
Some dealerships will offer a “lifetime sealant” package and say if you purchase this you will never have to wax your car again.
These over-priced, so-called “lifetime sealant” packages are usually accompanied by a warranty, to make them easier to sell.
Unfortunately most consumers don’t realize that these warranties require you to have the sealant re-applied every six months to a year by the dealership, and prohibit you from polishing or waxing your vehicle yourself.
Because customers rarely return to have the sealant re-applied as scheduled, and thus voiding the warranty, this high priced add-on item puts easy money in the dealer’s pocket.
We have customers who come in and say ”I purchased a lifetime paint sealant from the car dealership when I bought my car, so why does my paint already look so bad?”
This is because they were left with the false expectation that the dealer’s “lifetime sealant paint protection program” would prevent paint damage (scratches, swirls, etching, acid rain damage, etc.) forever in some way and this simply is not true.
This idea of a paint sealant that will protect your vehicles paintwork forever with only one application, is a great idea, and we wish it were true, but unfortunately there is no such product available on the market today.
However, there are some paint sealants and coatings available that will last well over one year when properly applied and maintained.
