Some window tinters aren’t skilled enough to heat shrink the film to fit curved rear windows, so they ‘splice’ two or more pieces together along the defroster lines. We don’t do it that way at Dr. Detroit’s, all rear windows are done in one piece by an experienced window tinter.

No. Your rear window defogger will work just as well, or even better than before tinting the rear window.

Assuming that you have good vision, any tint shade lighter than ‘limo black’ should be fine. Limo black is fine in daylight, but it can make seeing out harder at night. For example, if you’re backing up in a very dark area with no street lights, then your reverse lights may not be bright enough for you to see well. In this case, rolling down the driver’s side window and looking out may be sufficient for you.

As a safety precaution, it’s always a good practice to walk around your vehicle to look for obstructions before backing up, whether or not you have tinted windows.

Any normal ‘ammonia free’ glass cleaner and paper towels. Micro-fiber cloths wors even better than paper towels. Just be sure that you DO NOT use an abrasive glass polish.

If your car is a few years old, there’s a good chance that there are small scratches on your glass. Dark window tint will make the scratches slightly more visible. People will often only notice these small scratches for the first time when they inspect their newly tinted windows.

There are different series (types) of window films.  The main types of tint are a Full Metal tint, High Performance (HP) Metalized tint, and the Non-reflective (NR) tint for automotive uses. The full metal is very shinny and contains no polyester, while the HP films are a combination metalized and polyester. The Non-reflective window film is a UV stabilized window film and contains no metal. After being applied on window glass, all the types of film will reduce the heat and other solar radiation coming in through the window. The High Performance and Metalized tint, as well as the newest series of Non-Reflective films, carry a lifetime guarantee. There are also specialized films such as privacy films, safety and security films, and even graffiti guard films.

Window film has adhesive on one side, which is covered with a protective liner. The tint installer removes the liner and exposes the adhesive, which is then activated by spraying a soapy solution on it. The film is then affixed to the inside of the glass and the excess water is squeezed out using a special type of squeegee.

Window film is best suited for plain window glass. It is not recommended for any non-smooth surfaces and most other smooth surfaces other than glass.

The heat rejection property of film varies according to the type to film. The reflective range of film rejects up to 80% of heat.

The life span depends on various factors such as application of film, orientation of the window, region or location etc. On average a professionally installed good quality film should last about 10 years or more.

Strictly speaking there is not any one-way film for both daylight and after dark. However, reflective films prevent visibility from outside (area of greater light intensity) during the day and vice-versa at night.

Window tinting manufacturers have recently introduced new ‘Blackout’ film, which can completely block 100% of light, and thus obstructing any visibility through the window from both sides.

Window Film provides various advantages which are not achieved in factory tinted glass, such as heat rejection, protection from harmful UV rays (up to 98%), protection from flying shards in the case of accidental breakage of glass. Thus window film is better than factory tinted glass based on these features. It’s also cost a lot less.

Most window films are UV stabilized, which can cut up to 98% of the harmful UV rays that cause fading. But it should be noted that UV rays are only one of the components in the solar energy spectrum, and the other components such as heat, Infrared radiation and light are also responsible for fading due to sunlight. Since these factors vary for different types of films, the extent of fading will depend on the type of film used.

Window Film, after being affixed to window glass, reduces the heat entering through the glass, thus enhancing cooling of the room. As a result there is a cut down in terms of the energy consumed, and therefore window film is called an energy saver. The extent of energy saved will depend on the type of film used as different films have different heat rejection properties.

Window film, applied on glass can prevent flying glass shards in the event of accidental breakage. However it does not reduce the chance of glass panes breakage, it just holds the broken glass pane together.

Time required to affix the film depends upon various factors such as the number of window panes, place of application, ease of access to the glass, type of film, the installer’s efficiency etc.

Curing time for window film adhesive applied on glass depends on the factors such as film type, time of the year when film is applied, time of the day when film is applied etc. The recommended curing time for ordinary window film is at least a week from the day of application but some haziness and cloudiness may last up to 3 or 4 weeks in colder overcast weather.

Yes, we can remove the old window film and replace it with your choice of new window film. One advantage of window film is that you can change it if you want to.

The main thing to remember is DO NOT use any cleaner with ammonia in it. Some window cleaners, like Windex, contain ammonia and some do not. Some brands of foam cleaners that come in spray cans do not contain ammonia. You can use a alcohol base window cleaner, or pure rubbing alcohol works great. Cleaning of windows can be done using a soft cloth and plain water too. Do not use dirty rags or rough and abrasive material for cleaning. Micro-fiber cloth works best, but old cotton t-shirts or paper towels work too.
